Cavia porcellus is the scientific name , meaning 'Pig -like cavy ' but they are usually called guinea pigs or cavies. When the Spanish landed in Peru 500 years ago they found the Inca's kept cavies as pets . The first guinea pigs were brought back to Spain by sailors as pets for their children and sold in the markets for a Guinea .
